Hovering nose-in, posing for the camera!
The YS 80 runs very smoothly and consistently and produces loads of power. It is without a doubt the best helicopter engine I've owned to date. The 30% Cool Power fuel works very well, loads of smoke and a fantastic mellow engine note.
Hovering left-side-on and ready for a brisk circuit!
In both of the above photographs the Extreme is hovering with a 1600 head speed. This is maintained by the Futaba governor and seems to be reasonably optimal for hovering. I've used one of my FF8's spare rotary controls to program the desired head speed. The lower limit is fixed at 1200 RPM and the upper limit maps to 1950 RPM.
With this set-up it is important to remember to increase or decrease the head speed in order to match the selected flight mode. The YS 80 produces so much power that so far a head speed of 1650 RPM has been more than adequate for all my idle-up maneuvers. I imagine that this head speed will increase once I gain the confidence to really indulge the helicopter in aerobatics.
In the future I may change the governor set-up to use preset head speeds that are selected by the flight mode switch as I feel that this might make things simpler, i.e. no knob twiddling in idle-up etc.
The engine is now probably just about run-in and with my current flying style gives me about 15 minutes of flight time, not bad considering the amount of power on tap!
