Restoring the Doors

The Cooper's two doors appeared to be in very good condidition, the previous owner of the car had re-skinned them. However, a full strip down will be required just to make certain. Things always look much better than they really are!

Bare Frames

Each door has been stripped down to its basic frame. These have then been blasted, to reveal and remove any rust, and finally primed for protection.

The frame shown in the photo has not yet been repaired.

Both doors will be fitted with new skins. Unfortunately, it was not possible to remove the old skins without damaging them.

Lower Section

The lower section of the door was reasonably bady corroded and would need to be replaced. It is not possible to buy a repair panel, but it was easy for Andy to make one! The panel can be seen laying across the sandbag in the photo.

When Andy made the repair panel he maintained the correct curvature and shape, including the outer flange required by the door skins.

Fitted Section

Andy's new lower door panel has been welded into position, and leaded.

Finished Items

This photograph shows both of the completed doors, one behind the other.

When fitting a new door skin, the lower section can be welded immediately. However, the top sections must not be welded into position until the door has been re-attached to the car. This ensures that the door frame and skin flex to form the correct shape prior to welding.

Only the visible door, shown in the photograph, has been re-attached to the body shell and has its new skin completely welded into position.
